In a significant move aimed at overhauling the primary education system, Hon. Prince Godwin Ogorugba, Chairman of Isoko North Local Government Council, has pledged to eliminate ghost workers and absentee teachers from the local schools.

During a recent visit from Hon. Samuel Mariere, Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Ogorugba unveiled plans for a comprehensive audit, including a physical headcount and biometric verification of all school staff. This initiative is part of a broader effort to restore and enhance educational standards in the region.

Ogorugba emphasized that the current state of education in Isoko North is deteriorating, and he is committed to aligning improvements with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda. The audit will target absentee teachers and ghost workers to ensure a transparent and accountable workforce.

“In our quest to improve the primary school system, we will employ biometric checks and conduct on-the-spot assessments of schools,” Ogorugba stated. He also mentioned that the administration plans to provide essential supplies, such as notebooks and writing materials, to support students and ease the burden on parents during these challenging times.

Hon. Mariere’s visit was part of Governor Oborevwori’s initiative to address pressing issues in primary education. Mariere condemned reports of extortion within schools and urged immediate cessation of such practices. He also called for enhanced security measures at schools, advocating for community involvement in managing school facilities.

“The governor recommends that school structures be monitored by local community guards and managed by school-based committees. We acknowledge the shortage of teachers and will submit a memo to the governor for necessary actions,” Mariere added.

This bold step by the Isoko North Local Government aims to revitalize the education sector and restore confidence among parents and students.
