Belfast’s own Lewis Crocker has written his name into boxing history after defeating Paddy Donovan to capture the vacant IBF world welterweight title in front of a roaring crowd at Windsor Park. The 27-year-old secured a split decision victory, with judges scoring the bout 114-112 and 114-113 in his favor, while one judge sided with Donovan at 115-111.

The night belonged to Crocker, who knocked Donovan down in both the third and fifth rounds, moments that ultimately swung the fight in his direction. For the Belfast fighter, it was a statement of redemption. Their first clash in March ended controversially when Crocker won by disqualification despite Donovan dominating much of the action. This time, however, there was no doubt about the outcome.

Crocker, now boasting an unbeaten record of 22-0, fought with greater composure and sharper technique, landing quick, precise punches while carefully pacing his power shots. Donovan, whose record drops to 14-2, put up a determined performance but could not recover fully from the knockdowns.

“Everybody doubted me after the last fight, but tonight I proved myself. Make sure you write it down, Lewis Crocker, world champion,” the new titleholder declared, sending the Windsor Park crowd into wild celebrations.

The atmosphere was electric. Donovan, fighting away from his Limerick base, entered the arena to “Better Off Alone” and still commanded a strong following from traveling fans. Yet it was clear from the opening bell that Crocker was locked in. He refused to be distracted and kept his composure, controlling the rhythm of the fight.

The first two rounds were cagey, but the contest exploded in the third when Crocker clipped Donovan as he pressed forward. Referee Howard Foster ruled it a knockdown, sparking a surge of energy in the Belfast crowd. Donovan rallied in the later stages of the round, but by then Crocker had found his confidence.

In the fifth, another well-timed shot floored Donovan, cementing Crocker’s control. From that point on, both fighters traded heavy hooks, but Crocker’s discipline and accuracy carried him through to the final bell.

The night also carried historic weight for Belfast boxing. This was the first major fight at Windsor Park since Carl Frampton defeated Luke Jackson in 2018, with Frampton watching from ringside as his city welcomed a new hero.

With the IBF belt now around his waist, Lewis Crocker has not only silenced critics but also placed himself firmly among the rising stars of world boxing.
