Robert Lewandowski, Poland’s all-time leading scorer, has announced that he will not represent his country as long as Michal Probierz is the manager.
This decision comes after he was removed from the captaincy.
The 36-year-old forward has scored 85 goals in 158 matches for Poland, but is not included in the national team’s lineup for the current international break.
On Sunday, the Polish Football Association stated that Probierz had “personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire team, and the coaching staff of his decision” to make Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zielinski the new captain.
In response to this news, Barcelona’s Lewandowski shared on social media: “Considering the situation and my loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to step down from playing for the Poland national team while he is in charge.”

He added, “I hope I will have another opportunity to play for the best fans in the world.”
The Polish FA also mentioned that Probierz will address questions at a press conference on Monday, before Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Finland. He will be joined by Zielinski, who is 31 years old.
Probierz, who became coach in September 2023, saw his team finish last in their group at Euro 2024, making them the first nation eliminated from the tournament.
However, Poland currently leads their World Cup 2026 qualifying group with two victories out of two matches.
The Netherlands follows in third place with three points from one game.
