A senior lecturer at the Nigerian Army University, Biu (NAUB), Dr. Audu Ibrahim Adamu, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly to stop any attempt to repeal the Nigerian Army University Establishment Act of 2020.

In a statement titled “Do Not Murder or Erase NAUB,” Dr. Adamu warned that the proposed plan to convert the Nigerian Army University, Biu, into the “Federal University, Biu” would erase the institution’s founding identity and compromise its unique military–civilian model.

He described the move as “a disservice to the North-East,” stressing that the university was established during the peak of the insurgency to provide stability, discipline, and access to higher education in one of the country’s most affected regions.

“NAUB was born out of necessity, to bring education and hope to a region scarred by years of insurgency. Its military–civilian structure is not an accident but a deliberate model to foster peace, order, and national development,” he said.

Dr. Adamu explained that the Nigerian Army’s involvement in the university’s administration has ensured discipline, security, and operational efficiency. He cautioned that removing that oversight could lead to administrative lapses and weaken the institution’s unique character.

“The Army’s presence has provided structure and a sense of order essential for a school located in a post-conflict zone. To remove that framework without a clear plan would endanger the stability we have worked hard to achieve,” he added.

The lecturer called on federal lawmakers to consider NAUB’s role in rebuilding the North-East and its contribution to youth empowerment, innovation, and peacebuilding. He urged both chambers of the National Assembly to consult widely with stakeholders before taking any legislative action.

According to him, repealing the law without engagement with the university community, the Nigerian Army, and regional leaders could undermine the very foundation that made NAUB successful.

Dr. Adamu further appealed to President Tinubu to intervene personally, saying that preserving the Nigerian Army University aligns with his administration’s commitment to inclusive education, security reform, and national unity.

“NAUB represents a beacon of resilience and national integration. Its transformation into a regular federal university would dilute its essence and undo years of progress made through collaboration between the military and civilians,” he stated.

He concluded by urging the government to strengthen rather than scrap the institution, emphasizing that “NAUB should be seen as a model for rebuilding societies emerging from conflict, not as an experiment to be discarded.”
