A lawyer, named Johnmar Jideobi has initiated a lawsuit in the Federal High Court in Abuja, aimed at preventing former President Goodluck Jonathan from running in the 2027 presidential election.
In the case identified as FHC/ABJ/CS/2102/2025, Jideobi is requesting the court to issue a permanent injunction that would prohibit Jonathan from seeking nomination from any political party, citing constitutional restrictions on presidential terms.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the attorney general of the federation have also been named as co-defendants in the case.

The plaintiff contends on Monday that Jonathan, who first assumed the presidency in 2010 following the death of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and was subsequently elected in 2011, has already served two terms in office.
Therefore, any attempt to run again in 2027 would contravene Section 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution.
He argues that permitting Jonathan to run again would violate the constitutional framework and has urged the court to stop INEC from accepting or announcing his candidacy in any upcoming elections.
The court has not yet scheduled a hearing date for the case.
