Lagos State University (LASU) has been thrown into uncertainty as key staff unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have declared an indefinite strike, threatening to paralyze academic and administrative activities across all campuses.
The industrial action, which took effect immediately, follows a breakdown in negotiations between the university management and four major unions: ASUU, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT). In a joint letter dated July 31, 2025, the unions accused the university administration of neglecting key staff welfare issues and failing to meet longstanding demands.
Addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the letter ordered an immediate cessation of work by all union members. Staff at LASU’s main campus in Ojo, as well as those at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja and the Epe campus, were instructed to vacate their workstations without delay.

Union leaders stressed that the strike action is indefinite and will persist until the university authorities take concrete steps to resolve all pending issues. They warned that academic operations, including lectures, research, and examinations, will remain on hold, and administrative functions will grind to a halt if management fails to act swiftly.
The LASU strike has sparked concern among students and parents alike, with many fearing the disruption could lead to prolonged academic delays. This development also adds to the growing list of industrial actions crippling Nigeria’s public university system.
