The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, has issued a stern warning to property developers and homeowners across the state. He emphasized the urgent need for strict adherence to safety protocols and the mandatory acquisition of building approvals, noting that repeated violations are costing lives.

During an on-the-spot assessment of the collapsed structure in the Ota Ona area of Ikorodu on Wednesday, Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu expressed deep concern over the recurring trend of preventable building disasters in Lagos. Despite significant investments by the state government to strengthen emergency response capabilities, he said non-compliance with construction regulations remains a leading cause of structural failures.

“We were able to rescue eleven people alive, but sadly, we recovered three bodies,” the LASEMA boss revealed. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this unfortunate incident. Under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the government has put in place comprehensive measures to safeguard lives and property, but public cooperation is key.”

Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu stressed that disaster management should not be viewed as a government-only responsibility. He called on residents and developers to take safety seriously by following building guidelines, undergoing required inspections, and securing proper documentation before starting construction projects. According to him, the recurring tragedies underscore a troubling disregard for regulations that are designed to protect lives.

The LASEMA boss also pointed out that the state has revamped and re equipped its emergency response teams, especially in preparation for seasonal disasters predicted by meteorological agencies. He warned that the government would no longer tolerate negligence and would step up enforcement of environmental and structural safety rules.

“Our assessments show a clear pattern, many developers are cutting corners and ignoring government regulations. While our emergency teams have responded swiftly and effectively, the focus now must shift to prevention through full compliance with the law,” he stated.

Following the collapse, a nearby building that may have been affected structurally will undergo integrity tests to determine its safety for occupancy. Authorities are not taking chances, as the safety of residents remains a top priority.

Speaking during the inspection, Secretary to the Ikorodu Local Government, Mr. Afinni Lateef, confirmed that the council is committed to identifying and reporting distressed buildings for immediate government action. He assured residents that the council would not only step up surveillance but also reach out to the families of the victims to offer condolences and support during their time of grief.

As Lagos continues its rapid urban development, this incident is a sobering reminder of the need for vigilance, responsibility, and collaboration between citizens and the government. Preventing another tragedy begins with doing the right thing before disaster strikes.
