The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring fair remuneration and improved working conditions for street sweepers across the state. In response to recent concerns about the program, LAWMA has clarified the structure, payment system, and welfare initiatives designed to support the workers who help keep Lagos clean.
According to LAWMA, the street sweeping program operates through private companies that engage sweepers under structured contracts. These companies are responsible for paying their workers directly, with salaries now adjusted in line with the national minimum wage.
Under the revised payment structure, sweepers receive ₦40,000 per month, while supervisors earn ₦50,000 monthly. The work schedule consists of four-hour daily shifts, allowing workers flexibility to engage in other economic activities.
Beyond wages, LAWMA emphasized its dedication to worker welfare through several key initiatives aimed at improving safety, security, and job satisfaction. The agency has implemented regular health and safety training programs to equip sweepers with best practices for their daily operations. Additionally, sweeping routes have been reclassified to prioritize worker safety, ensuring that all personnel operate in secure environments.

To further support workers, LAWMA provides accident and emergency insurance coverage to protect sweepers in the event of work-related injuries. The agency also supplies uniforms and necessary work tools to enhance efficiency and dignity in service delivery.
Addressing concerns about salary discrepancies, LAWMA assured workers that any reports of unfair treatment or contractual violations are promptly investigated, with corrective actions taken where necessary. The agency remains committed to enforcing standards that guarantee fair treatment and compliance with agreed terms.
The success of Lagos’ street sweeping program depends on the dedication of its workers, and LAWMA has pledged to continue improving their welfare while enhancing service delivery for a cleaner and healthier environment.
