The Lagos State Government has publicly denied allegations made by Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, concerning the demolition of a property he claimed belongs to his brother. In a strongly worded statement, the state government clarified that neither the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) nor any other government agency was involved in the alleged demolition.
The statement, jointly signed by Gbenga Omotosho, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, and Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, Special Adviser on eGIS and Urban Development who oversees LASBCA, expressed deep concern over what the government described as “baseless and misleading claims” by Mr. Obi.
According to the officials, there is no record of LASBCA executing any demolition at the disputed property, contrary to the narrative being pushed on social media and in the press. “It is disturbing that such a serious allegation would be made without verifying the facts,” the statement read. “We find it necessary to set the record straight and assure residents that Lagos State does not operate outside the bounds of the law.”
The government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining peace, safety, and order across the state. It warned against acts of lawlessness and stressed that anyone found guilty of illegal demolitions or property encroachments would be held accountable under the law.

To ensure transparency and get to the bottom of the matter, the Lagos State Government has ordered a full investigation. Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, FNIA, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, has been directed to initiate a comprehensive review through LASBCA to uncover the true circumstances surrounding the alleged demolition.
The government urged members of the public to disregard Obi’s claims, which it described as attempts to misinform and discredit the state’s urban development processes. “Lagos remains a welcoming, law-abiding state for all Nigerians. We will not be distracted by unfounded accusations,” the statement emphasized.
While public discourse around the ownership and demolition dispute continues to unfold, the Lagos State Government reiterated its unwavering dedication to the safety, security, and legal protection of all residents.
