The Lagos State Police Command has arrested popular TikTok influencer Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, following a viral video that showed him driving recklessly while livestreaming, an act that reportedly resulted in a serious road accident.

In a statement released on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that the incident occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025. The video, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, captured Peller driving at high speed while interacting with his online audience, drawing sharp criticism from the public and security agencies.

According to the police, Peller’s actions were described as irresponsible and a clear threat to the safety of other road users. The statement noted that driving at excessive speed during a live broadcast amounted to a deliberate endangerment of lives, including those of innocent motorists and pedestrians.

Following the widespread circulation of the footage, operatives of the Lagos State Police Command took the influencer into custody for questioning. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, where a detailed investigation is ongoing. The police said Peller would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the inquiry, with the outcome to be made public.

Reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, issued a stern warning to social media influencers and content creators, cautioning them against using their platforms to promote or engage in illegal and dangerous activities. He stressed that online popularity does not place anyone above the law and that reckless behaviour capable of endangering lives would attract the full weight of the law.

The police also used the occasion to remind motorists to comply strictly with traffic regulations, reaffirming their commitment to public safety and the maintenance of law and order on Lagos roads.

The arrest has reignited debate on the growing influence of social media and the risks associated with content creation that prioritises online attention over public safety.
