Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has been impeached and replaced by Mojisola Meranda, who represents Apapa State Constituency I.
Before her elevation, Meranda was the deputy speaker and now becomes the first female to lead a state House of Assembly in Nigeria.
To fill the vacuum filled by the new speaker, Fatai Mojeed, was elected as the new deputy speaker.
The impeachment of Obasa follows controversial remarks he made regarding his ambition to become the governor of Lagos State in 2027.
Last November, during the presentation of the 2025 budget by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Obasa stated that he was both experienced and too young to be excluded from the governorship race, claiming that previous leaders were not superior to him.
He emphasized that his motivation was to build the party, rather than personal ambition.
Obasa rejected accusations that he was seeking family connections to bolster his candidacy and faced scrutiny over alleged misuse of funds, including a claim of spending N17 billion on a gate for the state assembly complex, along with accusations of mishandling constituency funds and projects.
