Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has revealed that tolling on the highly anticipated Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will begin this December.
Speaking during an exclusive interview for a forthcoming documentary marking President Bola Tinubu’s two years in office, Umahi disclosed that Section 1 of the coastal superhighway will be tolled as part of a strategic 10-year investment recovery plan.
“By December, we will commence tolling on Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway,” Umahi stated. “The goal is to achieve a return on investment within ten years.”
Billed as one of the most transformative road projects in Nigeria’s history, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is more than just a road. It’s a futuristic economic lifeline featuring solar-powered street lights, surveillance cameras for enhanced security, and an environmentally sustainable design aimed at boosting tourism, trade, and connectivity across Nigeria’s southern corridor.
According to the Minister, 30 kilometers of Section 1 are already completed, with another 10 kilometers nearing completion. Both sections are constructed as six-lane highways, designed for speed, safety, and durability.

Work is also accelerating on Sections 3 and 3B; covering a combined 65 kilometers across Cross River and Akwa Ibom states. Umahi emphasized the enthusiastic reception from local communities, citing it as proof of the project’s positive economic impact.
“Just a few days ago, we flagged off construction on Sections 3 and 3B—38 kilometers in Cross River and 27 kilometers in Akwa Ibom. The joy and support from local communities speak volumes about the opportunities this project is unlocking,” he said.
In a broader infrastructure push, Umahi also confirmed renewed focus on the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, part of a colonial-era trade vision that President Tinubu’s administration is now determined to bring to life.
“The Trans-Saharan trade route has deep historical roots, and President Tinubu is committed to making those long-held dreams a modern-day reality,” Umahi added.
