The Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi has disclosed that construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is 70% completed and it is expected to be finished by January 2026.

Umahi shared this information during a recent site visit on Wednesday, 30th April,2025.

During his tour of the highway, Umahi mentioned that he was meeting with the financial partners involved in the project, which include Dutch Bank and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.

He noted that by May, they anticipate that 20 kilometers of the highway, starting from Ahmadu Bello Way in Lagos, will be completed.

“We are going to go beyond that 20 kilometers from this point,” he stated confidently. He highlighted that more than 70 percent of the entire highway project has already been completed.

Umahi remarked, “Let me clarify that this project is over 70 percent finished, even though the contractor hasn’t received funding that matches that progress. This shows that they are focused on building the nation rather than just making profits.”

He also pointed out that along the highway, land has been set aside for tourism, industries, factories, and housing developments. “This is part of the overall design for the highway,” he explained.

The minister assured everyone that, with God’s help, the road will be completed by January next year. He mentioned that the financial backers of the project are happy with the quality and the progress being made.

Umahi also praised Hitech Construction Company, the contractor managing the project, for their excellent work, noting that the design of the road is of high quality.

He highlighted that while the concrete was planned to be 275 millimeters thick, they are actually making it 280 millimeters thick for extra durability.

He acknowledged the great job done by the department responsible for this project and emphasized a concern regarding the safety of drivers accessing the highway directly from their homes. “This poses a significant challenge, so we need to create barriers to manage this issue,” he said.

Umahi emphasized that as a major highway, it will be essential for drivers to access it through designated flyovers and interchanges to minimize traffic delays.
