The Lagos State House of Assembly has strongly denied reports that 27 of its members are planning to defect to the Labour Party (LP). In an official statement signed by Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukkayode, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security, the Assembly dismissed the claims as baseless and misleading.
According to the statement, there is no truth to the speculation that a mass defection is underway. The Assembly emphasized that recent political changes, including the removal of former Speaker Hon. Mudashiru Obasa and the election of Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the new Speaker, are part of the internal democratic process and not an indication of party disloyalty.
“We find these reports not only unfortunate but also riddled with inaccuracies. The Lagos State House of Assembly remains united under the ruling party, with no member contemplating defection,” the statement read.

The Assembly further condemned what it described as attempts by external forces to sow discord and confusion among lawmakers and the public. It reiterated that all elected members remain committed to fulfilling their mandate under the party’s leadership.
“There is no crisis that warrants any member considering defection. Any internal disagreements are being addressed through constructive dialogue and democratic processes,” the statement affirmed.
The House urged media organizations to uphold ethical journalism by fact-checking reports before publication, ensuring that the public receives accurate and responsible news.
