The Lagos State Government has announced an 18 week maintenance programme for the Mazamaza Bridge along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, as part of preparations for its planned demolition and reconstruction under the Blue Line Rail Phase 2 extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in an official statement, noting that the maintenance will begin on Monday, January 19, 2026, and will involve repair works on both the Toll and Service Lanes in the inbound and outbound directions. The intervention will focus on expansion joints and other critical structural components of the bridge.
Osiyemi assured motorists that the bridge will not be fully closed at any point during the maintenance period. He explained that traffic will be managed through carefully planned diversions across the Toll, BRT, and Service Lanes to reduce inconvenience to road users.
According to the statement, the traffic diversion plan covers maintenance of the bridge elements along the Lagos–Badagry carriageway, both inbound and outbound, from Monday, January 19, 2026, to Thursday, May 28, 2026, spanning a total of 18 weeks.
The maintenance schedule includes a preliminary phase between January 24 and January 30, during which work zones will be set up and traffic patterns assessed. This will be followed by Phases 1 to 4, running from January 31 to March 30, which will concentrate on repairs along the Badagry bound lanes. Phases 5 to 8, from March 31 to June 2, will focus on the Lagos bound lanes.
Motorists are expected to experience lane restrictions throughout the maintenance period, which is scheduled to end on May 28, 2026.

The state government also outlined temporary traffic arrangements to manage vehicular flow. During the early phases affecting the Badagry bound lanes, the BRT corridor will be used as a diversion while work is carried out on the Toll Lane. When repairs move to the BRT corridor, the Toll Lane will serve as the alternative route. Maintenance on the Service Lane will temporarily reduce traffic to a single lane until full access is restored. A similar diversion pattern will apply to the Lagos bound lanes, with traffic alternating between the BRT and Toll Lanes. Final repairs on the Service Lanes will also limit movement to one lane before completion.
Drivers have been advised to observe traffic signs and comply with directives from officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority to ensure safety and steady traffic flow during the maintenance works.
The planned reconstruction of the Mazamaza Bridge follows earlier disclosures by the Director of Rail Transport at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Olasunkanmi Okusaga, who stated in December 2024 that structural assessments showed the bridge lacked the required strength to support rail operations. He added that the new bridge will be rebuilt to international standards, supported by 66 piers, and designed to last for at least 75 years.
