Kwankwaso set for ADC defection on March 2 as 2027 election battle intensifies

Former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is reportedly preparing to join the African Democratic Congress on March 2, 2026, in a move that could alter the balance of power ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.

Reports circulating in Abuja and across social media platforms indicate that Kwankwaso will formally announce his defection next week. While neither the former governor nor the ADC has issued an official statement confirming the development, the speculation has already stirred intense political debate.

Kwankwaso, a prominent opposition figure with deep roots in northern Nigeria, has been at the centre of alignment talks for months. Observers say his next political step has been closely watched, particularly as opposition parties explore new coalitions to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

Sources familiar with the negotiations suggest that internal discussions within the ADC may have slowed the timing of the announcement. Central to the conversations are arrangements surrounding the party’s 2027 presidential ticket and how Kwankwaso’s ambitions align with other influential figures, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, who reportedly joined the ADC in December 2025.

Insiders describe the planned defection as more than a routine party switch. They view it as part of a broader strategy to consolidate opposition strength and present a unified front in the next election cycle. Political analysts argue that Kwankwaso’s established support base in Kano and across the North could significantly boost the ADC’s national profile if negotiations are successfully concluded.

The development also underscores the shifting alliances that have become a defining feature of Nigeria’s pre-election landscape. As parties reposition and key actors seek strategic leverage, the ADC is increasingly seen as a potential rallying platform for major opposition figures.

Despite the growing buzz, there has been no formal confirmation of the March 2 date. Party stakeholders and voters alike are awaiting clarity, as the countdown to the 2027 general election gathers momentum and the contest for power begins to take clearer shape.
