The former Governor of Kano State and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso, is reportedly exploring a political alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) banner.
Despite indications that Kwankwaso’s political organization is leaning towards the All Progressives Congress (APC), he is currently in talks with the ADC about a possible coalition, involving members of his Kwankwasiyya Movement, which forms his primary support base.
Sources indicate that discreet negotiations are already in progress as these political figures look to establish a united opposition front in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
This development comes amid strong signs that Governor Abba Yusuf, the NNPP governor in Kano State, is planning to switch to the APC.
Kwankwaso has reportedly opposed Gov. Yusuf’s defection, which has caused significant rifts within the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Insiders close to the Kano governor have revealed that Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC National Chairman, Prof. Yitwalda Nentawe, former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, and the state party Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas are expected to attend a brief ceremony in Abuja to mark Gov. Yusuf’s transition to the ruling party.
If the discussions involving Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso prove successful, analysts believe this alliance could greatly alter the dynamics of opposition politics and shift Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
