Kano State’s political space has become increasingly tense following the resignation of Governor Abba Yusuf from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), a development that has triggered political backlash, resignations and visible realignments within the state government.
Gov. Yusuf announced his resignation from the NNPP on January 23, 2026, citing deepening internal crises and leadership disputes within the party.
The move has fuelled speculation that the governor is preparing to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a decision his supporters describe as a strategic alignment with the federal government.

Reacting to the development, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, described the governor’s action as a betrayal.
Addressing his supporters at his Miller Road residence in Kano, Kwankwaso declared January 23 as “world betrayal day,” saying the idea was inspired by social media commentators critical of Gov. Yusuf’s exit from the NNPP.
“As the leader and grand patron of this movement, I fully support the declaration,” Kwankwaso said, adding that the day would be marked annually with activities to remind members of the development.
