Fillmmaker, Kunle Afolayan has revealed details of the heated phone conversation he had with actress and producer Funke Akindele during an interview on Arise News.
The discussion followed reports that he had criticized filmmakers who heavily depend on dance-focused and aggressive marketing strategies.
Afolayan described the call as surprising and emotionally charged.
“She called and said, I know you don’t like me, but please don’t mention my name in your interviews. She was upset, shouting, and then hung up,” he revealed.
He said that he found the situation odd, considering their long-standing friendship.
“Funke is like a sister to me. We grew up together… I honestly didn’t understand where this was coming from,” he stated.
The filmmaker emphasized that his comments had been misinterpreted.
He clarified that he never criticized Akindele or any other filmmaker for their promotional methods, explaining, “I only mentioned that it’s not something I personally want to do. It’s exhausting for me.”
These remarks were made during a film business forum that addressed issues of cinema sustainability, profitability, and the economic viability of cinema releases.
Afolayan expressed disappointment over the online backlash that ensued.

“If she felt offended in any way, I apologize,” he said, condemning the coordinated attacks that intensified the situation.
Despite the disagreement, he insisted that his comments were not personal.
He also commended Akindele’s accomplishments, describing her career trajectory as strategic and deliberate.
“I actually advised young filmmakers that if they want a successful model today, they should study Funke Akindele’s journey from Jenifa to where her brand is now,” he affirmed, reiterating that he harbors “no ill feelings towards her. She’s my sister.”
