A Kenyan court has found a Nigerian citizen, Okwudili Onuh, guilty and imposed a fine of Ksh46.5 million on him in a prominent drug-related case.
In a statement released on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the office of the director of public prosecutions reported that Onuh admitted guilt to several charges of drug trafficking under Section 4 (a)(ii) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act.
His change of plea came after the prosecution presented compelling evidence during the hearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Richard Koech, prompting Onuh to accept responsibility for the allegations.
“Onuh was fined Kshs. 46,500,000 for counts 1, 3, and 4, with a default sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment for each count,” the ODPP statement indicated.

The ODPP also mentioned that the sentences would run concurrently, considering the three years he has already spent in custody.
The court’s decision against Onuh followed extensive arguments from both the prosecution and defense during the sentencing phase.
In a related matter, the case against co-defendant Hamid Annet Njoki Kaur is set to continue with a hearing on Monday, September 29, 2025.
This development comes shortly after a Nairobi court approved a request from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to detain a Ugandan woman extradited to Kenya on suspicion of drug trafficking.
Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi granted the DPP’s request to keep Hellen Ikareut in custody while investigations under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act are finalized.
Anti-Narcotics Unit officers intercepted a suspicious shipment on May 18, 2023, at the DHL cargo facility at JKIA.
The package, allegedly sent by Ikareut from Kitengela, a suburb of Nairobi, was intended for Chris Kagawa Manana Godaibiya in Bahrain.
It contained 25 shower curtains that were hiding a greenish plant material, which tested positive for narcotic substances upon inspection.
Initial investigations indicated that the suspect fled to Uganda shortly after the shipment, leading the DPP to request assistance from Interpol for her extradition.
