Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State was involved in a road accident on Sunday evening, July 20, 2025, while traveling along the Daura-Katsina highway. The incident, described as a minor collision by state officials, has led to the governor’s hospitalization for precautionary medical evaluations, sparking concern and well-wishes from residents and political allies across Nigeria.

According to a statement released by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, the accident occurred while Governor Radda was carrying out official duties. The governor’s convoy reportedly collided head-on with a Volkswagen Golf vehicle along the busy Daura-Katsina Road, a route frequently used by state officials, particularly in recent weeks due to condolence visits following the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a native of Daura. The governor, alongside his Chief of Staff, Alhaji Abdulkadir Mamman-Nasir, and another aide, sustained minor injuries in the crash. They were promptly evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre in Daura for initial treatment before being transferred to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Katsina for further care.

“We are pleased to confirm that the Governor is in good health and stable condition, with no serious injuries sustained,” Mohammed stated, seeking to allay public fears. “Governor Radda remains in high spirits and expresses his gratitude to Almighty Allah for His protection, as well as to Katsina citizens and well-wishers for their prayers and concern.”

In a short live video broadcast from his residence on Monday, July 21, Governor Radda addressed the public directly, speaking in Hausa to reassure residents of his well-being. “By the will of Allah, we were tested with a car accident, but Alhamdulillah, we came out safe and unharmed,” he said. He confirmed that he is currently under medical observation at home as a precautionary measure but emphasized that he remains in good health. “I’m pleased to confirm that I remain in high spirits. Once again, thank you for your heartfelt prayers,” he added.

Initial reports on social media, including a post by Mohammed Jammal, known as White Nigerian, claimed that the governor had sustained a fracture and was receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre in Daura. These reports caused a stir online, with many Nigerians flooding platforms like X with prayers and messages of support. However, the state government swiftly clarified that the injuries were minor, and the governor was stable. Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to the late President Buhari, further confirmed that the Katsina Local Government Chairman had reported the governor’s discharge from the hospital, alleviating concerns.

The accident has drawn attention to road safety concerns along the Daura-Katsina highway, a critical route connecting the state capital to Daura, the hometown of the late former president. The road has seen increased traffic in recent weeks due to official and political activities in the region, raising calls for enhanced safety measures to prevent future incidents

Governor Radda, who was elected in 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been a prominent figure in Katsina’s governance, focusing on security, youth empowerment, and economic development in the northwestern state. A former Director-General of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Radda has been actively involved in state projects and condolence visits, including recent trips to Daura following Buhari’s passing.

As news of the governor’s stable condition spreads, residents of Katsina and Nigerians nationwide have expressed relief and gratitude. Social media platforms continue to send messages of goodwill, with many attributing Radda’s safety to divine intervention. The governor is expected to resume his duties soon, continuing his commitment to serving the people of Katsina State.

The Katsina State Government has urged the public to remain calm and disregard unverified reports, assuring citizens that updates on the governor’s health will be provided as necessary. For now, Governor Radda’s recovery remains the focus, with the state rallying behind its leader during this time.
