Katsina State has called for the cancellation of the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) English Language examination recently conducted by the examination body.
This request is based on the disruptions that occured following the inability of of WAEC to conduct the examination at the scheduled time on Wednesday,, May 28, 2025, and affecting students nationwide.
The state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Zainab Musa-Musawa, made the call on Saturday, during her visit to the WAEC office in Katsina.
She emphasized the urgency of the situation, citing the chaos that ensued due to this delay.
The commissioner submitted a written petition for the cancellation, signed by Hajiya Ummukhair Ahmed, the Permanent Secretary of the Katsina State Ministry of Education, highlighting the official stance of the state government regarding the examination’s integrity and fairness.
WAEC attributed the delay to their intensified efforts to combat examination malpractice, particularly focusing on the prevention of question paper leaks.

This vigilance, however, resulted in unforeseen logistical issues on the day of the examination.
Consequently, many students found themselves writing the examination at night using inadequate lighting, which initially comprised only torch lights, mobile phone lights, and security lights until additional illumination could be provided.
The commissioner urged schools, parents, and the broader community to exercise patience and understanding as they await the formal outcome of the petition submitted to WAEC.
She reassured stakeholders that the government is committed to ensuring a fair examination process and the overall academic integrity in the state.
