A woman has died hours after giving birth to quintuplets at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano, in a tragic development that has left family members and sympathisers in mourning.
The Kano State Ministry of Health confirmed the incident on Thursday, identifying the deceased as Hafsatu Yusuf. She reportedly passed away around 2:00 a.m. following complications shortly after childbirth.
According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Nabilusi Na’isa, the woman developed severe bleeding after delivery. Despite efforts by medical personnel to stabilise her condition, she could not be saved.
He explained that initial medical scans had indicated the presence of triplets. However, as labour progressed, two additional babies were delivered, bringing the total number of newborns to five—three boys and two girls.
The quintuplets are currently receiving intensive care at the hospital, where medical staff are closely monitoring their condition.

Prior to the incident, the deceased’s husband, Salisu Nufi’u, a tricycle operator, had expressed gratitude to the Kano State Government for covering the medical expenses of both his wife and the babies.
Although the exact condition of the newborns has not been officially disclosed, hospital sources indicate that they remain under close observation.
Meanwhile, relatives and sympathisers gathered at the hospital to mourn the loss as news of the incident spread across the community.
