Kano State says it uncovered 247 ghost workers in its payroll in March, recovering N28 million in the process.

The state government said the 247 ghost workers discovered in its payroll include former employees who have retired and those who have died.

This revelation is contained in a statement issued by the Information Officer in the office of the secretary to the state government, Musa Tanko, in Kano, on Saturday.

According to the statement, the irregularities came to light during a comprehensive validation exercise conducted by the pay parade committee, aimed at ensuring the integrity of the payroll system.

Tanko emphasized the state government’s unwavering commitment to eliminating discrepancies within the payroll system and holding accountable those responsible for the illegal activities.

He stated that the misappropriated funds have already been recovered and returned to the local government treasury.

“The government plans to initiate further operations involving all relevant stakeholders to undertake a thorough review of the payroll system.

“This process will not only address the current issues but will also lay a foundation for more robust oversight moving forward.

“Further investigation will be conducted to determine the full scope of this apparent fraud and to identify all individuals involved,” Tanko added.

He reassured the public that anyone found to be complicit in these fraudulent activities will face legal consequences, in line with established laws and regulations.
