The Kano State government has said five additional entrepreneurship institutes closed down by the immediate past government of the state are set to be reopened to admit 1,400 new enrollees.

The institutes include the Poultry Institute in Tukui, Makoda, the Reformatory Institute in Kiru, Artisan Fisheries Institute, Magaga in Kabo, the Irrigation Institute, Gwarzo, and the Journalism Institute, Kano.

The state Statistician-General, and member of the steering committee on reviving the 26 entrepreneurship institutes, Dr. Aliyu Isa, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ workshop on job creation held in Kaduna.

He said the institutes were part of the 26 entrepreneurship institutes established during the administration of former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and subsequently shut down and abandoned for eight years by the Ganduje administration.

Isa explained that the decision of Governor Abba Yusuf to resuscitate the centers was part of his administration’s focus on human capital development as a tool for economic empowerment and poverty reduction.

He also added that the institutes will not only enable beneficiaries with valuable skills or boost local economies, but would also contribute significantly to the overall socio-economic transformation of the state.

“All preparations for the takeoff of these institutes have been finalized. Feeding arrangements, training materials, and basic infrastructure have been provided to ensure smooth operations from day one.

“The poultry institute will admit 600 women who will be trained in poultry rearing; the Reformatory Institute in Kiru will admit 200 beneficiaries who will be trained in sewing, welding, computer maintenance, and phone repairs; the artisan fisheries institute will train 200 in modern fishing techniques.

“The Irrigation Institute in Gwarzo, which will enroll 200 trainees for instruction in irrigation practices, and the journalism institute, which will also admit 200 students, who will be trained in journalism”, Dr. Isa noted.
