The State Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kano State, Hussaini Isa Mairiga, has resigned from his position and withdrawn his membership from the party, expressing deep frustration over what he described as the collapse of democratic ideals in Nigeria.
In a resignation letter dated October 21, 2025, and addressed to the party’s National Chairman, Mairiga said his decision took immediate effect. He lamented that democracy in the country had been hijacked by politicians who view it as a tool for personal gain rather than national progress.
According to him, the political class has “turned democracy into a business venture,” while deliberately engineering crises in opposition parties to weaken them ahead of future elections. He said the SDP had not been spared from this manipulation, describing the party’s internal rift as a major blow to its credibility as a viable opposition force.

“The SDP is currently grappling with multiple claims to its leadership, a situation that has crippled its unity and public trust,” Mairiga said. He decried the growing trend of politicians switching allegiance to ruling parties without consequence, saying such behavior exposes the absence of ideology and loyalty in the political space.
He further urged Nigerians who still believe in the ideals of democracy to step back and demand genuine reform, warning that the nation’s political system is fast losing its moral foundation.
Despite his disappointment, Mairiga expressed gratitude to the SDP for the opportunity to serve and wished the party success in reclaiming its founding principles.
His resignation adds to the rising wave of discontent within opposition parties as Nigeria’s 2027 general elections draw closer, fueling concerns about the state of internal democracy and political accountability across the country.
