Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has renamed the Kano State Sports Institute and the Kano State Sport Commission after the 22 athletes that died during a tragic road crash, while returning from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State in May, 2025.
The name of the institute and commission would be changed to Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute and Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Commission.
A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mustapha Muhammad, said the governor decided to honour the late athletes because they made Kano people proud and as such their sacrifice should be remembered forever.

Muhammad quoted the governor to have made this known when he recieved the First Lady, Mrs. Remi Tinubu and her team who donated N 110 million to the families of the 22 athletes.
The governor noted that the state will take care of the educational needs of the children of the late athletes, while their wives would be engaged in government empowerment schemes.
Similarly, he said the parents of the late athletes who were single wold also be taken care of by the state government.
