The Kano State Government has announced January 31, 2025, as the deadline for landowners across the state to re-certify their Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O).
This directive was revealed by the State Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning, Alhaji AbdulJabbar Mohammed Umar, during a press conference on Wednesday. The commissioner urged all landowners to visit the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning without delay to register their properties, emphasizing the importance of the exercise in safeguarding investments and avoiding potential disputes.
“Recertification ensures that ownership records are accurate, secure, and protected from future disputes,” Umar stated. He further highlighted that existing C-of-Os would become invalid after the January 31 deadline, urging citizens to take the opportunity to secure their land titles.
The commissioner also outlined the benefits of the recertification process, including the elimination of manual errors, the prevention of land document manipulation, and reduced delays in processing transactions. The new Certificates of Occupancy are equipped with advanced security features designed to prevent forgery and fraud.

To support this initiative, the state government has established modern infrastructure at the Kano State Geographic Information System (KANGIS), ensuring a seamless and efficient process for landowners. According to Umar, this system will revolutionize land administration by providing accurate and reliable property records.
Governor Abba Yusuf has also thrown his weight behind the initiative, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to enhancing land ownership processes and protecting citizens’ rights.
Landowners are advised to act promptly to avoid complications, as the government emphasizes that this recertification is critical to maintaining the integrity of property rights and fostering trust in the system.
