The Kano State Government has announced plans to organize a mass wedding ceremony for 2,000 couples as part of its social welfare initiative aimed at supporting widows, divorcees, and unmarried women facing financial hardship.

The directive, issued by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been handed to the Kano State Hisba Board, which has begun preparations for the large-scale event. The initiative, already gaining recognition as a cultural and social hallmark in the state, is designed to promote moral values, reduce poverty, and strengthen family stability.

Confirming the development in a phone interview with journalists on Thursday, Sheikh Mujahid Aminudeen, Deputy Commander-General of the Hisba Board, said arrangements are underway for what will be one of the largest state-sponsored wedding events in recent years.

“We are preparing to hold a mass wedding for 2,000 couples as instructed by the state government. The exact date will be announced once all logistics and screenings are completed,” Aminudeen stated.

According to him, all intending couples must undergo compulsory medical examinations, including HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, genotype, and drug tests, before being cleared to participate. “Only those who meet the health and moral requirements will be approved. Anyone who fails to comply will be automatically disqualified,” he added.

Governor Yusuf’s administration reintroduced the mass wedding initiative to address rising social challenges such as prostitution, street begging, and broken homes. The program also provides financial support, furniture, clothing, and dowries to ease the economic pressure on families.

The initiative has continued to attract public interest and widespread praise for helping restore dignity to underprivileged women while encouraging lawful unions grounded in Islamic principles.

Residents say the upcoming event, expected to unite thousands of couples in a single day, highlights Kano’s continued commitment to social reform and community development under the Yusuf-led government.
