The Kano State House of Assembly has summoned the Chairman of Rano Local Government Area, Nasiru Ya’u, over the demolition of over 500 shops in a market in the area.
The House ordered the local government chairman to appear before its ad hoc committee, following the adoption of a motion of urgent importance moved by the member representing Rano Constituency, Ibrahim Ahmad, during Monday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker Ismail Falgore.
Moving of the motion, Ahmad, said the market which has existed for over 60 years, was demolished on the orders of the council chairman, thereby affecting the source of livelihood of many residents who solely depend on the shops to cater for their families.
He queried why the local government would proceed with the demolition, when it hadn’t provided an alternative to the owners of the demolished shops.

Supporting the motion, members representing Ungogo and Rimin Gado/Tofa Constituency, Aminu Sa’ad and Mohammed Butu-butu, respectively cautioned local government authorities and state agencies against carrying out demolition exercises at night.
They canvassed that due process should be followed whenever any demolition exercise is to be carried out.
Also, the legislators said the police should be deployed when carrying out such exercises, instead of engaging the services of hunters.
After a careful deliberation of the motion, the speaker tasked the ad hoc committee chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Mohammed Butu-butu to summon the local government chairman, the shop owners, and a representative of the emirate to investigate the matter, and report back to the House within one week.
