The Kano State House of Assembly on Wednesday urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to extend the ongoing streetlight installation from Mariri–Maiduguri Road to Dawakin Kudu, Warawa and Wudil local government areas, citing rising insecurity along the corridor.
The resolution followed a motion adopted during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.
The motion, jointly sponsored by Hon. Labaran Madari (Warawa), Hon. Shuiabu Rabi’u (Dawakin Kudu) and Hon. Ali Abdullahi Manager (Wudil), drew attention to frequent attacks on commuters, particularly at night.
The lawmakers described the road as one of the busiest routes in the state, used daily by residents, traders and patients seeking emergency medical care. They lamented that poor lighting had created black spots where criminals allegedly ambush unsuspecting travellers and dispossess them of their belongings.
According to the sponsors, at least four flashpoints have been identified along the stretch where attacks occur regularly.
They argued that extending the streetlight project would not only curb criminal activities but also improve night-time economic activities and complement the government’s urban renewal efforts.

In a related development, the Assembly also called on the state government to embark on the construction of critical roads across several local government areas to boost economic activities.
The resolutions followed separate motions moved by Hon. Sule Lawan (Tudun Wada), Hon. Ali Lawan Alhassan (Bagwai/Shanono), Hon. Abubakar Danladi Isa (Gaya) and Hon. Musa Haruna Tahir (Albasu).
The roads listed for construction include Yarkawo–Yartalani in Tudun Wada; Kwanar Audua–Dafka Sare-Sare–Unguwar Tofa–Ballewa–Yatsawa–Takalmawa–Rimi Badingu–Jabar Kanawa–Surfan Raayi–Kare in Bagwai; and Kwanar Amarawa–Kademi–Sayaya–Faragai linking Gaya and Albasu LGAs.
The lawmakers maintained that constructing the roads would enhance trade, ease transportation challenges and improve the livelihoods of residents in the affected communities.
