The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Electricity Agency Bill, 2025, into law.

The bill seeks to provide opportunities for Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States to utilize other alternative sources of energy such as solar, wind and hydro for the energy needs of their citizens as well as the growth and development of their states.

The bill was considered at the Committee of the Whole and read the third time by the Clerk, Bashir Diso, during Monday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.

Highlighting on it composition and relevance, Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Husseini, told reporters that upon signing into law, the bill will boost electricity supply to the three states, alleviate suffering and reduce energy costs for citizens, equip small scale and mega industries with enough energy for business, as well as enable both hospitals and water treatment plants to conduct activities adequately.

He also added that the structure of the agency will include a commission chairman, a managing director, and a deputy managing director, with each state having three representatives and a chairman of the board rotating among the states to serve for a period of four years.

“The managing director must possess: cognate experience, with at least 10 years of experience in electricity generation, control, and energy distribution,” he stated.

In a related development, the House called on Governor Abba Yusuf to provide relief materials to the over 200 households affected by rainstorm last Thursday in Doguwa area of the state.

The member representing Doguwa State Constituency, Salisu Mohammed, in a matter of urgent public importance said the communities affected include Bahuwa, Rafin Dadi, Maraku, and Asada in Ungwan Tshohuwa Ward of his constituency.

While noting that no lives was lost, he said residential houses, school buildings and places of worship were affected with most of the roofs and buildings destroyed, leaving the people devastated and in dire need of support.

After careful deliberation, the House unanimously urged the state government to provide urgent assistance to the victims to cushion the effects of the disaster and the difficulties they are facing.
