The Kano State House of Assembly has commenced moves to repeal the Kano State Fire Service Directorate Edict, to prohibit the indiscriminate and rampant sale of cooking gas within Kano metropolis.

This move is sequel to a report presented by the House Committee on Special Duties which investigated the indiscriminate sale of cooking gas within residential areas, during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.

Presenting the report, the committee chairman who represents Gezawa State Constituency, Abdullahi Yahaya, said after engaging with the relevant stakeholders and the Kano State Fire Service Directorate, the committee discovered that there were about 475 illegal cooking gas premises within the state.

He also added that statistics available from the state chapter of the Nigerian Mainstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NRDPRA), shows 234 unlicensed natural gas retailers in the state.

The legislator stated that the investigation was carried out by the committee following a motion moved by the member representing Kiru State Constituency, Tasiu Abubakar, complaining about the indiscriminate sale of cooking gas and the danger this poses to the society.

Abubakar appealed to the House to look into the sale of cooking gas within Kano metropolis and the need to provide clear regulatory guidelines to safeguard lives and properties.

The committee however, recommended that the state government should provide a permanent site marketers of cooking gas at the six entrances of Kano metropolis, the same way it applies to mobile phone and pharmaceutical products sellers who are located in designated areas.

Meanwhile, following the adoption of the report by the House, Abubakar, sought the support of colleagues to repeal the fire agency edict and insert all the necessary amendments to empower, enhance and support the running of its services in the state.

It was like we were given a contract that in the next three years, we really do not care if you work for other people or do other things, make one film for us per year on being creative because these things are guaranteed and you have funds to make them. The budget you are being given is primarily tied to what they are getting in Nigeria.

“Thank God, we have shot seasons two and three of Anikulapo.
