The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections.

The decision was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the national commissioner and chairman of INEC’S Information and Voter Education Committee.

According to the statement, the exercise which was initially scheduled as part of preparations to update and clean up the national voters’ register will no longer be held before the 2027 polls.

Although INEC did not immediately provide detailed reasons for the postponement, the development is expected to reshape the country’s electoral timetable and voter management planning ahead of the next general elections.

The voter revalidation exercise is typically aimed at ensuring that the electoral register remains accurate, up-to-date, and free of duplication, while also giving eligible citizens the opportunity to confirm or update their voter information.

The postponement has already begun generating reactions among political observers and stakeholders, with many noting its potential implications for election preparedness, voter education, and logistical planning.

INEC, however, is expected to provide further clarification in the coming days on how the decision will affect ongoing electoral processes and future timelines.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible and transparent elections, assuring Nigerians that necessary measures remain in place to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process ahead of 2027.
