In a bid to break gender barriers and empower young girls in Wukari town, a day-long Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program was recently organized for public and private secondary school students.
The initiative, spearheaded by Favour Wazota Agbu, founder of Jukun Woman, aimed to equip young girls with the necessary resources and guidance to excel in STEM fields and transcend societal limitations.
Speaking via telecast, Agbu emphasized the importance of introducing STEM education to girls, citing the prevalent gender gap in these fields. She shared her personal interest in science subjects and encouraged girls to pursue careers in STEM, underscoring the vast opportunities available.
Dorcas Elisha, the program officer, highlighted the program’s goal of inspiring and encouraging girls to consider STEM careers, thus bridging the gender disparity in these fields.
She emphasized the need for collaboration with stakeholders in education and nonprofit sectors to raise awareness and promote STEM education in the region.

The event, as noticed by our correspondent, featured presentations from various experts, including Chinwendu Evian Madubueze from the Federal University of Agriculture Benin, who stressed the benefits and opportunities available to female mathematicians.
Daniel Yohanna Gambo Basuna, the Wukari education secretary, commended the initiative, recognizing its positive impact on the community.
Interviews with participating science students revealed their enthusiasm and gratitude for the program, expressing newfound motivation to pursue science subjects in school.
The event, which garnered widespread support and appreciation, signals a step forward in empowering young girls and promoting gender equality in STEM education in Wukari and beyond.
