In-form Jamal Musiala delivered a first-half hat-trick to lead Bayern Munich to a dominant 4-0 victory over Mainz 05 on Wednesday, securing their place in the German Cup third round.
Germany’s rising star Musiala opened the scoring just two minutes into the match, capitalizing on a pass from Harry Kane following a powerful left-wing drive by Alphonso Davies. Musiala, who also scored in Bayern’s recent 5-0 league rout over VfL Bochum, doubled his tally with a close-range header in the 37th minute.
Bayern, the current Bundesliga leaders, made their intentions clear in first-half stoppage time with two more goals. Leroy Sane struck first, followed by Musiala completing his hat-trick to effectively seal the match before halftime. This comprehensive victory marks a promising turnaround for Bayern in the German Cup, as they had been eliminated in the second round in three of the last four competitions.

In the second half, Bayern eased their pace, but Mainz found no way to penetrate their rock-solid defense. Substitute Leon Goretzka nearly extended Bayern’s lead with a glancing header, only for Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner to make a stunning save.
Elsewhere, Eintracht Frankfurt advanced with a 2-1 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach, while Werder Bremen edged past Paderborn with a 1-0 victory. However, Bundesliga side Union Berlin faced a shock elimination, losing 2-0 to third-tier Arminia Bielefeld.
Musiala’s stellar performance and Bayern’s strong form are sending a clear message as they continue their charge in both league and cup competitions.
