Suspected members of the Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) on Sunday kidnapped 13 teenage female farmers in the Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

Deputy Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Askira, disclosed that the girls were taken while they were harvesting crops in the Mussa District.

The attack is coming on the heels of a series of mass kidnappings in parts of the north, including the abduction of students from the Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, and St. Mary’s Secondary and Primary School in Papiri, Niger State.

Additionally, there was an assault on a church in Kwara State, resulting in the deaths of two worshippers and the abduction of many others.

Responding to questions about the latest abduction, Askira, who represents the Askira-Uba Constituency, noted that the victims, aged between 15 and 20, were attacked while working on farmlands that had been used by residents relocated from the unsafe community of Huyim to the relatively safer Mussa area.

“The victims were among those moved to Mussa to maintain their livelihoods through community farming,” he explained.

“One girl managed to escape and has reunited with her family, but the other 12 are still missing, and their whereabouts are unknown.”

Senator Mohammed Ndume (APC/Borno South), who represents the area, urged security forces to enhance their efforts to ensure the girls’ safe return.

He also called on residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activities related to terrorists to the authorities, while praying for the safe return of the abducted girls.
