Irri, one of the oldest and most prominent clans in Isoko Nation, witnessed a decisive moment on Friday when the Odiologbo of Irri Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Simon Wajutome Odhomo, Igbogidi I, bestowed the title of Clan Otota on Sir Itiako Constantine Onoriode Ikpokpo. The event drew a large crowd of chiefs and community members who described the honour as both historic and well deserved.

The position of Clan Otota, regarded as the official voice of the kingdom and second only to the monarch, is reserved for individuals known for character, service and loyalty to the clan. For many in Irri, Ikpokpo’s elevation reflects the impact of his efforts during years when the kingdom struggled to survive internal conflict.

Irri had endured a difficult period marked by leadership battles and the fight for control of community resources. The disputes deepened divisions, caused loss of life and created widespread displacement. With no effective constitution or structure to maintain order, the kingdom found itself without a clear path to stability.

According to the Monarch, amajor shift came in October 2014 when Sir Ikpokpo assumed office as Chairman of Isoko South Local Government. Determined to restore peace across the area, he insisted that Irri must return to traditional order and lawful leadership. One of his first interventions was guiding the kingdom toward the rightful emergence of a new monarch. Despite resistance from rival groups, he pressed for due process, which eventually led to the installation of HRM J. F. E. Aghagba, Amathovo I, as Odiologbo of Irri.

He said, Ikpokpo continued to push for reconciliation and transparent leadership. Months of discussions and mediation produced a new constitution for the kingdom. Under his supervision, Irri held its first peaceful elective conference in more than ten years. The process restored calm and allowed the community to rebuild trust. Elections held afterward continued without conflict, strengthening the peace he helped establish.

After the passing of HRM Aghagba, Irri again followed a lawful succession process, which produced the current monarch, HRM Simon Wajutome Odhomo, Igbogidi I. Many in the community see his reign as steady and progressive.

The late HRM Aghagba had earlier decorated Ikpokpo with the title of Atanaru, meaning Promise Keeper. The latest honour, conferred by the new king and the traditional council, marks a further acknowledgment of his influence in reshaping the kingdom’s story.

The ceremony drew elders, youths and women who described the day as a celebration of a man whose work had once rescued the community from turmoil. Many saw his elevation as a sign that Irri values integrity and remembers those who restore peace.

For the kingdom, the appointment of Ikpokpo as Clan Otota is viewed as the start of a renewed chapter, anchored on unity and a shared commitment to growth.
