Iran’s military chief, Ali Shadmani, has been killed in a targeted airstrike on Tehran-Israel marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel.

The Israeli military announced on Tuesday that Shadmani, who held the position of wartime chief of staff and was considered one of the highest-ranking officials in the Islamic Republic’s armed forces, was eliminated during an overnight operation conducted in central Tehran.

The Israeli Air Force executed the strike based on “precise intelligence and a sudden opportunity,” according to their official statement. This operation was aimed at a command center believed to be a critical hub for Iranian military operations.

Shadmani was renowned as the top operational commander within the Iranian military and was a close confidant of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Prior to his appointment as the head of Iran’s armed forces at the onset of the current five-day warfare, Shadmani commanded the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as well as the regular Iranian army, playing a pivotal role in the nation’s military strategy.

His ascension to command followed the assassination of his predecessor, Alaa Ali Rashid, in an earlier Israeli strike that sparked the recent hostilities.

The elimination of Shadmani, described by the Israeli military as a key figure in disrupting Iran’s military leadership, is expected to further destabilize the already fragile chain of command within the Iranian armed forces and hinder their operational capabilities amidst this escalating conflict.
