A major security breakthrough has been recorded in Edo State as the newly formed Special Security Squad, Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists, launched by Governor Monday Okpebholo, made its first wave of arrests, apprehending over 20 suspects across multiple crime hotspots in Benin City.
The squad, which commenced operations on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, stormed areas notorious for criminal activities including Isiohor, Iguosa, Oluku, and Ibiwe/Lagos Street. The crackdown led to the discovery of hard drugs, dangerous weapons, and other incriminating materials in possession of the suspects, many of whom are believed to be linked to cult groups, kidnapping syndicates, and drug trafficking networks.
John Adewale Eseikhaigbe, a member of the Special Security Squad, described the operation as a bold and necessary step toward restoring peace and public confidence in Edo State. He praised Governor Okpebholo’s decisive leadership and commitment to the safety of residents, noting that the Governor’s declaration to end violence and insecurity in the state has already begun yielding results.
“Thanks to the proactive measures of Governor Monday Okpebholo, Edo is taking a firm stance against crime. This squad was formed to send a clear message: cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery, and drug trafficking will no longer thrive in our state,” Eseikhaigbe stated.
He emphasized that the crackdown was not limited to cult-related offenses, but extended to drug peddling and kidnapping, crimes often interlinked in a web of urban insecurity. According to him, the raids will be sustained until Benin City and its environs are fully sanitized of criminal elements that threaten the peace and progress of the state.

Another key member of the security task force, Eribo Emwanta, addressed the recent sealing of a hotel in Isiohor, stating that the move was not a witch-hunt but a strategic intervention. He explained that the hotel in question had allegedly served as a hideout for drug dealers, cultists, and other criminals, prompting the government to invite its owner for questioning.
“This isn’t about targeting individuals. It’s about taking back our communities. Any establishment found to be harboring criminals will be investigated and dealt with according to the law,” Emwanta added.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration has made it clear that it will no longer tolerate the criminal elements undermining the safety of Edo people and deterring investors. The newly formed squad is expected to operate across the state, ensuring that no area becomes a sanctuary for crime.
As residents begin to witness visible action against insecurity, public optimism is growing that Edo State may soon reclaim its reputation as one of Nigeria’s safest and most investor-friendly destinations.
