The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented Certificates of Return to winners of the Ghari/Tsanyawa and Bagwai/Shanono by-elections in Kano State, officially confirming their victories.
Ya’u Gwarmai of the All Progressives Congress (APC) clinched the Ghari/Tsanyawa seat with 31,472 votes, defeating his closest rival, Muhammed Ali of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who polled 27,931 votes. In the Bagwai/Shanono contest, Ali Lawal Al-Hassan of the NNPP emerged victorious with 16,198 votes, beating Abdullahi Muhammed of the APC, who secured 5,347 votes.
The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ambassador Abdu Zango, while presenting the certificates on Friday, congratulated the winners and urged them to deliver quality representation to their people.
Reacting to his victory, Gwarmai described the outcome as a testament to God’s will and thanked the APC leadership for their support. He assured his constituents of development-driven representation, with priority on education and access to clean water, among other key projects.

On his part, Hon. Al-Hassan of the NNPP pledged to place education at the forefront of his legislative agenda while promising other impactful projects within the shortest possible time.
Also present at the ceremony was Hon. Sani Bala, the APC lawmaker representing Tsanyawa/Ghari Federal Constituency, who congratulated Gwarmai but vowed that the party would not relent in reclaiming the Bagwai/Shanono seat through legal means. According to him, Kano North remains a stronghold of the APC, and the NNPP’s victory in the constituency does not reflect the true will of the people.
With the certificates now presented, attention shifts to how the newly elected lawmakers will deliver on their promises, while the political battle between APC and NNPP in Kano intensifies ahead of future contests.
