The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it may review the dates fixed for the 2027 general elections following concerns that the scheduled polls will clash with nationally recognised holidays and observances.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, the commission said the timetable for the 2027 elections was developed strictly in line with existing constitutional and legal provisions.

INEC had earlier fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, while the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections were scheduled for Saturday, March 6, 2027.

The commission explained that the dates were chosen in compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections 2022.

Citing Paragraph 2 of its regulations, INEC stated that elections into the offices of president and vice president, as well as the National Assembly, are to hold on the third Saturday of February in any general election year, while governorship and state assembly elections are to follow two weeks later.

The commission maintained that the 2027 timetable was drawn up in “faithful observance” of these legal and regulatory provisions.

However, it acknowledged the backlash that has trailed the announcement, with stakeholders raising concerns over the coincidence of the election dates with certain national holidays and observances, warning that this could affect voter turnout and participation.

While not announcing an immediate change, INEC said it had taken “due notice” of the concerns and was currently consulting with relevant stakeholders.

It added that it may seek legislative intervention where necessary to address the issues raised, provided any adjustment remains consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.

“The commission remains sensitive to all legitimate concerns that may impact electoral participation and the overall conduct of elections,” the statement said.

INEC reiterated its commitment to transparency, inclusivity and the credible conduct of the 2027 general elections, assuring Nigerians that it would communicate any further developments.
