Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has dispelled social media speculation that he had proceeded on terminal leave by personally chairing the commission’s weekly management meeting yesterday in Abuja.
Yakubu not only presided over the crucial session but also approved the promotion of 471 junior staff, a move described as part of INEC’s commitment to merit-based advancement and staff welfare. The promotions, which cut across Grade Levels 03 to 06, followed recommendations from the Appointment, Promotion and Disciplinary Committee (APDC). Out of 515 staff shortlisted, 214 were elevated to Grade Level 07, 134 to Grade Level 06, 106 to Grade Level 05, and 17 to Grade Level 04.
According to INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, the exercise marks the conclusion of the first phase of the promotion process. He added that the promotion of senior staff has already commenced.

The meeting also reviewed ongoing preparations for the Anambra State governorship election, the Area Council election in the Federal Capital Territory, and the party primaries for the Ekiti and Osun governorship races.
Olumekun stressed that staff promotion remains a routine exercise aimed at rewarding dedication and boosting morale. He urged INEC workers to remain committed to delivering credible elections as the nation prepares for another cycle of crucial polls.
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s presence at the meeting and his direct involvement in these decisions put to rest the swirling claims of his early exit, reaffirming his grip on the electoral body ahead of the upcoming contests.
