In line with its preparations for the 2023 general election, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Imo State Chapter has inaugurated its Presidential Campaign Council, PCC, and Presidential Campaign Management Committee, PCMC, in the state with former Governor, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha and Chief Greg C. Egu as chairman and Director-General, DG, of the campaign structures respectively.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held Thursday at the Imo PDP State Secretariat, Owerri, Ihedioha enjoined members of the party to embark on aggressive grassroots mobilization of the electorate in their various chapters and wards in order to ensure victory of the party in the state.

Describing Imo as a core PDP State, the former State Governor and the Presidential Campaign boss harped on the need for all party members to close ranks and work together for the victory of the party in the state stressing that bitterness and rancour could mar the bright chances of the party “if not checked and nipped in the bud.”

Ihedioha thanked the PDP leadership for finding them worthy and fit for the onerous national assignment and accepted the responsibility to work assiduously to ensure victory for the party in the February 25, 2023 elections.

“I wish to thank our great party for finding us fit for this very important national rescue project. May I, on behalf of the members of the Campaign Council, accept this responsibility to ensure victory for our Presidential candidate, His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar GCON and his running mate His Excellency Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

“Recall that in the 2019 general election, Imo State scored 67% for the Presidential election. We have a duty to do better this time.”

He remarked that the recent laudable performance of the PDP under the seven months of his ‘Rebuild Imo’ administration, “is enough to amass votes of Imolites for the party in next year’s polls.

“We won the governorship election in 2019 and in the seven months of our administration, we demonstrated high-level patriotism and preparedness to rebuild our state. We redefined and delivered good governance and gave a sense of belonging to the people of the state.

“Our administration restored confidence in governance; revolutionalized agriculture, implemented Treasury Single Account, TSA which saw to the growth of our IGR from N145m in May 2019 to N1.1 billion by December 2019; we institutionalised autonomy of the local government system, restored salaries and pensions to 100% and paid as and when due, we began an audacious 33 major road projects across the State; there was security of lives and property; tourism industry and businesses were booming and many more. These are realities on ground.

“We must take this message home and convince the grassroots to vote for our candidates. We believe we have the best candidates. We are proud that the Vice Presidential candidate is our brother, an Igbo man who has shown capacity in the offices he has held”.

“I want to appeal to all our members to eschew the bitterness, rancour and concentrate on the job towards ensuring a landslide victory. It is important also that we must relocate to our various localities and ensure that the job is done with diligence, commitment, doggedness and passion.

“As for the task before the team, we shall endeavour to synergize with both the PCC and Management Committee, knowing that we have a task to do our state proud.

“We have an important responsibility to deliver all our candidates in all the elective positions. This committee is an umbrella platform for all the candidates and therefore we must ensure that we deliver 100% across the state,” the PCC boss added.

The chairman used the occasion to announce that the Imo PDP is ready to receive the Presidential Candidate and the National Campaign train on Saturday, 17th December 2022 and urged all members of the party and people of the state to prepare for the epochal occasion.

Also speaking, Director of the Campaign Management Committee, Hon Greg Egu, charged all members of the Council to work for the success and victory of the party stressing that Akitu’s victory comes 2023 will open the door to winning other elections for the party in the state and the nation at large.

Earlier in his welcome address, State Chairman of PDP, Engr. Charles Ugwu expressed optimism that victory is in sight for the PDP and called for all hands to be on deck.

Ugwu who sued for peace, urged the leadership and stakeholders of the party to take the victory that is set for the party more seriously than personal aspirations.

He noted that the Imo PDP has men and women of capacity who can ensure victory in the coming elections, the state chairman boasted that there is nothing to fear in the task to reclaim and rebuild Imo and Nigeria come 2023.

A total of 1,125 members of the council were inaugurated among whom were; former Governor, Chief Achike Udenwa, Technical Adviser; Rt. Hon. Jerry Alaghoso, Vice Chairman; Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary, Chief Charles Ezekwem and Hon. Ray Emeana, Deputy Director and Secretary respectively, among others.
