In the wake of devastating floods that have ravaged the Niger Delta region, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) is urgently calling on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development to deliver immediate relief to affected communities.
The appeal was made through a statement from Tare Magbei, the IYC Western Zone Information Officer, and shared with journalists in Delta State. The council emphasized the “severe impact” of the flooding on Ijaw communities along the coastline, highlighting the urgent need for federal intervention.
“The floodwaters have overtaken many homes and communities, leaving residents displaced and struggling to secure basic needs,” the statement revealed. The IYC is urging both the Federal and State Governments to set up Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and distribute essential relief materials to those affected.
The organization pointed out that the Federal Government’s prompt responses to crises in other regions demonstrate its capacity for coordinated intervention, and they implored the government to extend similar support to the flood-impacted Niger Delta communities.

“This year’s flood has overwhelmed many Ijaw communities, rendering homes uninhabitable, displacing families, and destroying livelihoods,” the statement added. “Given the magnitude of the disaster, it is imperative that immediate and comprehensive action is taken by relevant government agencies to alleviate the suffering of our people.”
The IYC’s call to action emphasizes the pressing need for the establishment of IDP camps and the distribution of critical relief materials, urging the government to provide necessary support to affected communities.
As the situation unfolds, IYC said it remains focused on advocating for the welfare of their communities, emphasizing the need for timely government assistance to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
