The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a firm warning to officers of the Nigeria Police Force following a surge in reported cases of extortion and high-handedness. In a recent statement, the IGP expressed his deep concern over the misconduct, vowing that corrupt practices will not be tolerated under his leadership.
In a press release shared via the official police X (formerly Twitter) handle, the IGP stressed that the force is committed to restoring integrity and public confidence. The statement, signed by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, noted that the IGP delivered the warning during a conference held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan International Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
IGP Egbetokun addressed senior officers, including Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and heads of formations, emphasizing the need for immediate action to curb corruption within the force. He called for strict supervision and discipline, urging top officers to ensure that those under their command adhere to the highest standards of professionalism.
As part of the anti-corruption drive, IGP Egbetokun has directed the IGP X-Squad, Monitoring Unit, and Complaint Response Unit (CRU) to carry out nationwide checks on officers. This move aims to detect and eradicate misconduct at all levels of the force. Officers found guilty of extortion or other corrupt practices will face severe disciplinary action, including termination of employment.

The IGP declared that supervisors who fail to enforce discipline among their subordinates will also be held accountable under the principle of vicarious liability. This means that senior officers will face consequences if those under their command engage in unethical behavior.
The IGP also condemned the unethical practice of some officers falsely using his name or those of other senior officers to extort money from the public. He made it clear that any officer caught engaging in such fraudulent activities would face swift and strict penalties.
IGP Egbetokun called on the public to remain vigilant and report any attempts at extortion or unethical behavior by police officers. He emphasized that public involvement is crucial to maintaining a transparent and accountable police system. Reports can be made through the IGP’s Complaint Response Unit or directly to the X-Squad.
