The Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D, NPM, is set to deliver the convocation lecture at the University of Ibadan today at 4 pm. The lecture, taking place at Trenchard Hall, marks a significant event as the academic institution convenes to celebrate its graduating class of 2024.

Dr. Egbetokun, who assumed the role of Acting Inspector General in June last year under President Bola Tinubu’s administration before his confirmation, is well-known for his strategic approach to policing and maintaining internal security in Nigeria. His appointment and subsequent actions have been subjects of national discourse, especially in the context of police reforms and the management of security challenges across the nation.

The theme for this year’s lecture, “Unlocking Progress: The Indispensable Trio Of Security, Governance And Citizens’ Responsibilities,” reflects a critical look at the intersection of law enforcement, governmental roles, and civic duties in fostering national development. This choice of topic underscores the IGP’s commitment to not only law enforcement but also to broader societal issues involving governance and citizen participation.

Egbetokun’s lecture comes at a time when Nigeria grapples with multiple security issues, from insurgency in the northeast to banditry in the northwest and community clashes elsewhere. His address is expected to delve into how the Nigeria Police Force navigates these challenges, potentially offering insights into new strategies, policy implementations, or community engagement programs aimed at enhancing security.

The convocation ceremony itself is not only a time of celebration for the graduates but also an opportunity for thought leadership and policy discourse. The lecture by the IGP is anticipated to draw a wide audience, including academic scholars, security experts, students, and members of the public, all eager to hear from one of Nigeria’s top law enforcement officers.

In his previous engagements, like the one reported in June where he spoke on managing internal security, IGP Egbetokun has emphasized the importance of strategic policing, community involvement, and the role of educational institutions in shaping a secure society. Today’s lecture is expected to build on these themes, offering both reflection on past efforts and forward-looking strategies.

The presence of the IGP at such an academic event also highlights the ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between law enforcement practices and academic research, aiming for a symbiotic relationship where both sectors can learn from and support each other in building a safer, more just society.
