The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Friday received members of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja to deepen security collaboration within Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.

The meeting centred on strategies to enhance security across the downstream segment of the oil and gas industry, a sector widely regarded as vital to Nigeria’s economic stability and energy supply chain.

The delegation was led by Hon. Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere (Ikenga Imo), Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), alongside other committee members. Senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force, including members of the Police Management Team, were also present.

In his remarks, Ugochinyere commended the IGP for his leadership and proactive measures in protecting national energy infrastructure.

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, the lawmaker praised the Police Force for stabilising operations during recent industrial tensions, strengthening inter-agency cooperation, and tackling oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

In response, Egbetokun thanked the committee for its recognition and reaffirmed the Police Force’s commitment to safeguarding petroleum infrastructure nationwide.

He pledged to intensify surveillance operations, improve intelligence gathering and sharing, and strengthen partnerships with other security agencies to ensure steady energy supply and enhance investor confidence.

The IGP also appealed to the committee for legislative support to reinforce the legal framework governing petroleum infrastructure protection. He further sought backing for increased funding to support personnel training, acquisition of modern surveillance equipment, and improved welfare for officers deployed to secure critical downstream assets.

Egbetokun reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to protecting petroleum resources, restoring stability in affected communities, and ensuring uninterrupted access to energy for Nigerians.
