The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has donated a total of N60 million to the families of officers involved in a tragic motor accident on September 24, 2024 while returning from a special duty during the Edo State Governorship Election.
The accident, which occurred on the Zaria-Kano Expressway, involved 16 officers and resulted in the deaths of five officers, while 11 others were injured, with eight discharged and three still receiving treatment.
In a press statement on the Force verified X handle, the IGP has swiftly responded to the plight of the victims by providing N10 million each to the families of the five deceased officers, N2 million to each of the three officers still hospitalized, and N500,000 to the eight officers who have been discharged after receiving medical care.
The statement which was signed by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, Abuja, claimed the financial support, totaling N60 million, is part of the IGP’s effort to support the welfare of the officers and their families during this challenging time.
The IGP has also directed the Police Insurance Unit and the Account and Budget Department to process and expedite statutory insurance and welfare benefits for the deceased officers, emphasizing that the recent donations are separate from the statutory entitlements they are due.
