The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun arrived Benue State on Monday, June 16, 2025, to conduct a thorough firsthand assessment of the escalating security crisis that has resulted in the tragic loss of lives and the displacement of numerous residents.
The police confirmed the inspector-general of police’s visit in a short message posted on its official page on X (formerly Twitter).
According to the statement, “IGP arrives Benue, orders for additional deployment of tactical teams.”
Egbetokun’s visit is particularly significant following a harrowing attack on the Yelwata community last Friday.
During this incident, armed assailants, believed to be herdsmen, unleashed a wave of violence that left many dead and others injured, further aggravating the atmosphere of fear and insecurity in the region.
This incident is part of a troubling trend of violent clashes that have troubled Benue State over the past few weeks.
As a vital agricultural hub, Benue State has faced violence rooted in long-standing tensions between indigenous farming communities and nomadic herders, leading to tragic confrontations that disrupt lives and livelihoods.

The IGP’s visit coincides with a renewed call to action from President Bola Tinubu, who in a statement issued on Sunday, urged military and security leaders to implement urgent and strategic measures aimed at restoring peace and stability in the embattled state.
“The latest reports of senseless killings in Benue State are profoundly distressing. We cannot permit this cycle of bloodshed to continue unchecked. Enough is enough,” President Tinubu asserted emphatically.
He emphasized that he has instructed security agencies to take immediate and decisive action against the perpetrators of these heinous acts, ensuring that all parties involved in the conflict are held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
